November 2, 2023. Prof. Jin-ichiro Yamada gave a keynote speech at the 19th International Conference on Knowledge-Based Economy & Global Management at the opening. The keynote speech was titled “Rediscovering University Ethos Amidst Academic Capitalism: Unveiling the Complexities of Regional Innovation Policies and Entrepreneurship “. This special invited opening session was interspersed with several Q&A sessions, during which graduate students and researchers from Europe, the U.S., and Southeast Asia asked a series of lively questions. The two-day international conference was attended by more than 200-plus participants from over 15 countries around the world.

Prof. Yamada explained how urban cultures with different historical characteristics and entrepreneurship ecosystems, such as Sapporo and Kyoto in Japan, are affected by policy interventions and stimulus packages from academic capitalist central and regional governments and related organizations. He explained how human capital investment and its relationship with local economic communities have led to current science and technology transfers and outcomes, etc., through a theoretical framework and other means based on years of empirical research and longitudinal case studies.

There were questions about comparisons with cases in various parts of Taiwan, as well as in Germany, France, and Southeast Asian cities, and a lively discussion ensued. The active discussion that took place through this international academic event, which directly addressed the light and shadow of academic capitalism and knowledge economy, is expected to accelerate closer research cooperation and exchange among related research institutions in order to consider the issues of entrepreneurship and local economies in the global era of geopolitical instability.
